I am a tenant, can I exchange my house or my apartment?
Yes you can, the exchange isn’t quite considered as a sub-let but as a « loan », you can exchange your house without having to warn your landlord.
Am I insured in case a problem pops up? What are the risks?
You must check that through your insurer, but most of your partners are considered just as guests are. Don’t forget that your fears are exactly those of all your partners. In any case, your insurer prefers to know your house occupied than totally empty. Good communication and preparation with your partners is necessary to minimize risks. Don’t hesitate to ask for extra photos and videos so as to know each other better.
How to organize to swap keys?
The ideal would be for a member of your family, a person you trust or a neighbor to take on this role and stop by to hand over the keys as well as to explain the way certain equipment works and introduce the area. However, if the exchange has been organized a long time ago, you can always send the keys via mail.
Does my house necessarily have to be the equivalent?
No, as long as the two partners are ok with that. What counts is the fact of traveling.
Is there an exchange contract?
There is no obligation to sign a contract to exchange one’s house although we highly recommend it, even just to make sure you can avoid surprises. A contract can help you set things straight: dates, number of participants...
Can I exchange my car also?
More than half of the partners exchange cars, that depends on what you need and are willing to exchange.
Does the exchange have to be done simultaneously?
In general, it is simultaneous; although many people include their holiday home, therefore you don’t have to exchange simultaneously.
Regarding animals?
Each member fills in his/her profile concerning exchange criteria, up to you to fill it in correctly and indicate animals when you are searching for a housing solution.
How much time do I have to wait before the first exchange?
As with everything else, it will depend on the market. However, don’t hesitate to ask our members. Make sure the description of the apartment is close to reality with photos and videos; It is what reflects your seriousness and helps build trust.
How much time does an exchange last?
All depends on what you have set up with your partner. This having been said, international exchanges are most often between 1 and 4 weeks. Short stays i.e. weekends represent a lot of the exchanges.
